Profoto – Testing the new A10

23 September, 2020

Today Profoto has launched their new flash A10. One week ago they sent me one unit to my home to be able to test it before their launch.

They didn’t pay me and didn’t ask me to make this post, for this reason, I feel totally free to explain you my truly feelings with this tool, with good and bad things.

Before starting, I need to say that I’ve never used the old Profoto A1 or the Profoto Connect.

The first good thing I must say is that it took me less than 5min to understand how it works the flash and the connection with the Connect. It’s easy and it works.

As a photographer, I know that this kind of remote triggers sometimes makes us crazy because they always give us problems when we need them, but was not the case when I tested it.

The flash it’s easy to use, from the Connect you can easily choose Manual or Auto. Obviously I used it in Manual mode and my assistant was changing the power of the flash with my indications.

That’s some of the shots I’ve got of Sheila Avilés with my Sony A7R3.

But there is more about the Profoto A10, because this new tool has one particular utility that can be really interesting for some photographers, ‘content creators’ or even journalists.

The opportunity to connect the flash to your phone and be able to shoot it as a light for your phone. Again, it took me less than 5min to connect the phone to the Profoto A10 via Bluetooth and start shooting with it.

That’s the shot I’ve took with the phone!

Should I say one bad thing?
Then, I need to say that the connection via Bluetooth is obviously not fast enough to shoot a fast situation… I mean, there is a gap of 1 second between the time when you press the button on the phone and the shot is done.

I think it makes difficult to use the flash in some particulars photographs like the ones I was taking with Sheila Avilés, but the flash will for sure work amazingly in portraits, events or so many different situations more.

Thanks to Profoto and Casanova Foto to give me the opportunity to test in advance this A10 flash and to Sheila (runner) and Xavi (assistant) to give me 1h of their time!

Hope you enjoyed the post!
